Rhenus Lub introduces two new products

Lubricant manufacturer Rhenus Lub is ushering in a new era for composite machining with its special coolants rhenus XY 190 FC and rhenus XT 46 FC. Fibre composite materials can now, in comparison with conventional machining operations like dry machining or minimum quantity lubrication, be processed significantly more efficiently.

Higher quality, improved health protection

Using a special coolant developed specifically for the processing of fibre composites represents a successful alternative to conventional dry processing. Special coolants rhenus XY 190 FC and rhenus XT 46 FC help to reduce tooling costs through reduced wear on tools, as well as shortening manufacturing times through higher cutting speed and feed rate. Delamination is also avoided, increasing component quality and reducing the need for re-working. This provides significant quality and cost advantages.
rhenus special coolants are also pioneering in terms of health protection: Dry dust, which has the potential to cause cancer, is trapped optimally during manufacture—for the highest level of acceptance among process managers and machine operators.

Pioneers in the machining of fibre-reinforced polymers

Graduate engineer Meinhard Kiehl, Director of Marketing, Product Management at Rhenus Lub, thinks the business is on the right path: “We understand the process and know that machining carbon fibre polymers is particularly demanding. As the manufacturing process remains bound up with high levels of value creation, the use of our special coolants—developed exclusively for composite machining—enables this process to be performed on a much more competitive basis. Products have impressed in comprehensive testing

In developing its new products, Rhenus Lub has collaborated with strong partners. The Research and Transfer Centre (FTZ) at the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau supported the project in terms of production suitability tests, and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Braunschweig helped with material and compatibility tests.
Before entering the market, all aspects of the coolant’s performance were subjected to comprehensive field tests in collaboration with a well-known customer from the automotive segment. “The field tests enabled us to impress our demanding test customer with remarkable results. For example, rhenus XT 46 FC helped carbon machining to be carried out with a feed rate up to 60% higher than normal, producing four times as many parts”, explained Dr. Hans Jürgen Schlindwein, Head of Coolant Research & Development and Quality Control at Rhenus Lub. rhenus XY 190 FC

Properties

rhenus XY 190 FC is a water-soluble, fully-synthetic special coolant, used for efficient machining of composite materials such as carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) as well as combined lightweight materials (Stacks). It is also suitable for combined machining of workpieces made of composite materials in combination with metallic materials, such as high-strength steel grades.

It is also suitable for combined machining of workpieces made of composite materials in combination with metallic materials, such as aluminium alloys or high-strength steel grades.
