Rhenus Lub singled out for digitised grease production
Mönchengladbach, 20 June 2017 — Lubricant manufacturer Rhenus Lub was among the winners from a Germany-wide campaign entitled “WE DO DIGITAL”, run by the DIHK. This initiative offered prizes for outstanding success stories relating to digitisation. The medium-sized company impressed the panel of specialist judges with its project entitled “Digitisation of the grease factory — A key step towards Industry 4.0 (Industrial IoT)”. The award was collected during an awards ceremony on 15 June by Thomas Genz, Head of Marketing at Rhenus Lub, held as part of the global G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance Summit 2017 hosted at the House of the German Economy building in Berlin.
Rhenus Lub showcased for its approach to digital networking
When it comes to digitisation, it is not only large corporations that are leading the way. In Germany, it is small and medium-sized enterprises in particular that are putting the concept of digitization to good use in order to remain internationally competitive within their industries. The DIHK campaign entitled “WE DO DIGITAL” was designed to present best practice case studies from these companies to the public, as well as singling out projects that have used the digital transformation in an especially positive manner. Rhenus Lub was among the winners thanks to its digitised grease factory. The lubricant manufacturer has been able to network the entire production process and all production steps can now be reproduced will full transparency at all times. The digitised factory opens up new possibilities for the production of grease, as both the production process and the distinctive characteristics of a high-performance grease can be controlled intelligently and with a high degree of reliability using the data obtained.
Advantages of Industry 4.0 for customers too
“In this respect, our smart factory is a digital success story. We can now be more precise when it comes to complying with crucial production parameters and we are able to harmonise these parameters with one another. As a result of this approach, we have gained some important insights with which we can more closely manage our production parameters and make our high-performance lubricating greases more reproducible. This ability represents true added value for our customers. The quality, performance and reliability of high-performance lubricating greases is increasing — and this goes hand in hand with greater reliability for the respective application”, explains Thomas Genz.
A pioneering project for the lubricants industry
Thomas Genz sees the “WE DO DIGITAL” award for the company’s approach to Industry 4.0 as confirmation that Rhenus Lub is on the right path: “As an innovative company with strong investment potential, Rhenus Lub has been focussing for a long time on helping to actively shape the future of the industry and pressing ahead with digitisation and all of its advantages, even as a medium-sized company. Thanks to the continuous digitisation of our grease production in line with the benchmarks set by Industry 4.0, we are heading in the right direction. The fact that the judges singled us out for our approach at this important competition obviously makes us even happier and confirms our forward-thinking position. Incidentally, it is not just our own production processes that are being enhanced with digital technologies: FluidSafe, a device for continuously monitoring coolants, is an innovation based on the Industry 4.0 standard that allows our customers to benefit from digitisation expertise as well as arranging their production process in a much more economical format.”
Thomas Genz is also aware that these benefits are not just significant for his own company: “The current smart factory project that is shaping our lubricant production is relevant to the entire industry. As a pioneering project for production that demands the highest level of efficiency and quality, it represents a milestone in the manufacture of industrial special lubricants.”
The “WE DO DIGITAL” campaign
Companies with a maximum of 500 employees were able to apply from 6 March 2017 to 8 May 2017 at www.wedodigital.de. A total of 262 entrepreneurs from 147 locations in Germany participated. The national winners were announced after two rounds of judging, the first at a regional level and then another at the national level. There was an award for one company per industry in each region (north, south, east and west). The winners were announced on 15 June 2017 as part of the G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance Summit 2017 at the House of the German Economy building in Berlin.
