Rhenus Lub continues to reforest – 1,000 new trees for Hardter Wald

Sustainability in Mönchengladbach, Germany - Responsibility for generations

We are consistently continuing our regional commitment – this autumn, around 30 employees swapped their desks for spades and a pair of wellies. As a team, we planted another 1,000 seedlings in Hardter Wald – a sustainable investment in the future of the region.

‘The forest and its importance for the climate are very close to my heart,’ emphasises Isabella Kleeschulte, Head of Sustainability Projects at Rhenus Lub. ‘As a company, we want to take responsibility and preserve the natural environment that future generations will depend on.’

Looking back on last year – our promise continues to grow

Last year, we already sent a strong signal for sustainable forest development in the Hardter Forest. At that time, we joined forces to plant over 1,000 young trees, which have since developed excellently: despite minor natural losses, the seedlings have grown well – a visible result that our commitment is having an impact and strengthening the forest in the long term. These positive experiences motivated us to continue the campaign and plant another 1,000 seedlings. Together, we are turning a project into a tradition that continues to grow year after year.

Inspiration for our products

This connection to nature is reflected not only in the forest, but also in our laboratories. As a driver of innovation, we conduct intensive research into high-performance lubricants based on renewable raw materials at our Mönchengladbach site. What begins in the forest inspires us to develop rapidly biodegradable alternatives for industry. For us, the tree planting campaign is therefore not an isolated event, but an ecological decision to take responsibility and part of our daily work.

A climate-stable mixed forest for Mönchengladbach

The tree species were selected in close consultation with the local forestry industry. The aim is to sustainably close the gaps in the forest caused by drought and bark beetles. The focus is on diversity: a mix of English oak, chestnut, hornbeam and red oak was planted. These species are considered particularly robust and climate-resistant. ‘We are trying to create a stable mixed forest that will continue to thrive in the future,’ says the forest ranger responsible, explaining the background to the measure. ‘No one can predict the climate of the next 100 years with any certainty. But by combining artificial planting with natural regeneration, we are spreading the risk and giving the forest the best chance of developing healthily.’

The young trees come from certified nurseries and are already around 5 to 6 years old. There is a simple reason why planting deliberately takes place in autumn: the moist soil and rainfall in winter give the roots the best chance to grow well before the next growing season begins.

Strong together – even after work

In addition to the ecological benefits, the campaign also strengthened team spirit. We worked hand in hand across departments to achieve a common goal. At the end of the hard work, we rounded off the day with a cosy get-together. Fresh waffles and hearty tarte flambée helped us warm up and recharge our batteries – the perfect setting to enjoy our great working atmosphere and look back on our successful efforts together.
